Genetics Load the Gun. Environment Pulls the Trigger.


Moment of truth. I’m going to be totally honest with you. It drives me absolutely crazy when people say that ADHD, dyslexia, learning disorders and even autism is all genetic.

I get it. I really do. My grandpa had dyslexia and so did my uncle and my brother. Genetics play a role. BUT.

Genetics do not create epidemics.

The Proof is in the Peanut Allergies

Right now we have an autism epidemic. 1/65 children are autistic. If that was a life threatening illness we would be doing more than talking about it.

The bottom line is this: Genetics load the gun. Environment pulls the trigger.

I know. I know. I’ve heard it too. There is better diagnosis. Totally.

It’s criminal how many kids in the past were written off as lazy, stupid, undisciplined or just plain odd.

Yet if it was just better diagnosis, then we’d be able to explain what I call the-proof-is-in-the-peanut-allergy. When I was a kid in the 80’s we ate peanut butter sandwiches-at school and no one thought twice about it.

Kids Today are Sicker on a Very Bio-Chemical Level

Better diagnosis doesn’t fly because it doesn’t account for the sudden, massive, crazy explosion of anaphylactic food allergies in the last ten to fifteen years. There is no way would have missed a child having an anaphylactic reaction to his peanut butter sandwich in the 1980’s or before.

We didn’t miss food allergies in the past because they was uncommon.

You don’t even have to go through the trouble of asking an allergist. Ask any senior teacher. They’ll tell you there was always that one kid who had all the food allergies. Now every staff room has a bulletin board with dozens of kids faces and their list of foods that they have anaphylactic allergies.

Kids today have multiple serious food allergies to all kinds of foods like peanuts, dairy, gluten, eggs, fish and so on.

The Kids are Not Alright

The food allergy phenomena is enough to know that something is not right. Something is very off with the bio-chemistry of our children today. A sick bio-chemistry affects everything and that includes a very important organ in your child’s body-their brain.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist or a study to see that kids are struggling with learning and behaviour more than they ever did. It’s everywhere you look. Kindergarten teachers will tell you the younger kids just aren’t as developmentally ready.

School boards are having interventions regarding the large number of children who just aren’t meeting the milestones whether it’s holding a pencil correctly or their sensory motor systems being underdeveloped. They aren’t meeting basic milestones.

Even the Governments Have Noticed the Kids Have Changed

It’s such a concern that the Canadian government has funded numerous studies into why children are not developing like they did in the past and why so many of them are struggling with learning, behaviour and mental health.

Only a few decades ago there was one kid in a class who had ADHD. We had heard of dyslexia but not dyspraxia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, sensory processing disorder, oppositional defiance disorder and on and on.

The Cause is Simpler Than You Think

What all of these disorders have in common isn’t just genetics (but that is a factor and I will address it in more detail in a future post). All of these disorders are really a symptom of a problem–weak sensory-motor development needed for optimal brain development and a biochemistry that is sick from environmental factors like toxicity.

Even if genetics plays a role–environment plays a bigger one. There is a lot that can be done to unload that smoking genetic gun. I know because my daughter didn’t win the genetic lottery and after addressing environmental factors–she is thriving.
